The beaver is a semi-aquatic mammal and the largest rodent in North America. Beaver are vegetarians and eat aquatic plants, leaves, twigs and bark of trees.

Beaver are one of the few animals that will change the environment create a habitat that is suitable for them. They do this by the creation of dams to flood low lying areas. The resulting water provides the beaver with security from predators and easy access to food and building materials.

Beaver are territorial and will mate for life. They have one litter a year consisting of 3-5 kits. The young beaver stay with their parents until they are nearly two years old. At this time they are driven away by the adult beaver to make way for the new kits. An established beaver colony will consist of an adult pair and their young from the preceding two years.

Beaver may be removed at any time during the year with a 10 day permit from the board of health from the town where the conflict is occurring. They may also be removed during the regulated trapping season which runs from Nov.1- April15.
